"Over 500 years ago a people revolutionised our knowledge of the world.
Driven by a hunger for learning and discovering,
aware of the risks and hardships.
The Portuguese set sail from Lisbon in search of all things new: seas, lands, peoples and products.
Guided by science and skill, they created the first globalisation phenomenon.
Lisbon offered the world a new outlook.
At Belcanto, inspired by these past accomplishments,
we build the future while we preserve our customs and traditions, sharing the same attraction for novelty, appreciating team effort and the exchange of experiences and know-how.
Together we have discovered new techniques, new concepts and ways of serving,
creating a timeless and undated Portuguese haute cuisine
through connection, creativity, and a desire to evolve and go one step further."

José Avillez

Distinguished with two Michelin stars and currently in the seventy-fifth place on "The World's 50 Best Restaurants List", Belcanto opened in 1958, in Chiado, at the São Carlos square, next to the São Carlos National Theatre and to the house where the great Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa was born. Its singular location in Lisbon's historic centre, its graceful and sophisticated atmosphere, the discrete and attentive service, and the pleasures of its cuisine soon won over Lisbon's elite who turned Belcanto into an inescapable meeting place.

Belcanto by José Avillez re-opened at the beginning of 2012, totally refurbished, and was awarded a Michelin star that same year. In 2014, Belcanto received a second Michelin star, making it the first restaurant in Lisbon to be distinguished with two Michelin stars, and José Avillez was the first Portuguese chef to win this distinction in Portugal.

At Belcanto, José Avillez offers a revisited Portuguese cuisine in a stylish ambience, to a maximum of 28 seats, that makes us travel from the old romantic Chiado to the future. In a place filled with details, where art and memories are present, José Avillez invites us on an incomparable gastronomic and sensory journey.

In Belcanto's kitchen, José Avillez created a special, unique and exclusive place ― the Chef's table. At this table, it's possible to watch and enjoy the attentive and meticulous work of the team, while an exceptional tasting menu is served along with a special wine menu suggested by the sommelier Rodolfo Tristão.

José Avillez and his team consider haute cuisine a way of expression. At Belcanto, they share their inspirations, emotions and angsts through representations and culinary illusions. Each dish tells a story and its aim is to move those willing to try it.
